Still in high school yet winning over
old school punk fans with their updated brand of '80s-era threechord
thrashing, Seattle teens DEK are making their third trip to Grays
Harbor this weekend for an all-ages show set at Alfie's in Aberdeen.
An acronym for "Dont Even Know," DEK is made up of
Mark Vraney on guitar and vocals, Nick Myette on bass and vocals,
Bret Chernoff on guitar and vocals and Thani Suchoknand on drums.
Together just three years, DEK has played shows with some well-known
bands, including TSOL, the Skulls, Social Distortion, The Adolescents,
The Presidents of the United States of America and more. The
band just finished its second album, the follow-up to 2004's
"Boner," released on California's Finger Records.
Chernoff, the youngest member of the crazy bunch, took some time
out from his recording, practicing and homework schedule to talk
about life, liberty and the pursuit of a big Aberdeen crowd:
Preview: Why did you guys choose to play
punk music instead of anything else?
Chernoff: Well, at the time we created the band, Nick had just
seen TSOL at the Graceland and was totally into punk. I was into
anything heavy and it seemed easy enough to play so we went with
it.
Preview: Is it difficult to juggle the band and high school at
the same time?
Chernoff: There are some days where I'll scramble tto get my
homework done to go to band practice or wish practice was on
a different day because I have a pile of homework or something,
but not really. The band is our motivation to get good bands.
Preview: Did you enjoy playing Aberdeen last you were here and
what was so cool about it? Or what wasn't?
Chernoff: We loved playing Aberdeen last time! Everytime we come
here, it's like a community of people who just want to come,
have a good time, and listen to those who want to perform. In
Seattle there is so many politics going around it's really nice
to get away from it all.
Preview: Why are you guys coming back here?
Chernoff: We're coming back because we enjoy playing shows out
of town. We've seen somewhat of a fan base growth in the non-Seattle
cities and it's fun to put on shows in front of people who don't
care all the scene crap. Yeah. They just wanna have a good time.
Preview: What can people who come to your show expect to see?
Chernoff: Well, if they have not seen us before they can expect
something they've never seen before. If they have seen us, expect
new songs. Lots of them.
Preview: Do chicks flock to you because you're in a band?
Chernoff: Chicks flock to us?
